Honoring a Legacy of Innovation: Sam Kitchell Inducted into ASU School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment Hall of Fame

The School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, recently held its Hall of Fame and Academy of Distinguished Alumni event, celebrating some of the most influential names in the construction and engineering industry. More than 150 industry leaders, faculty, and alumni gathered for this invitation-only reception to recognize four outstanding alumni and two industry leaders for their significant contributions and unwavering commitment to excellence.

This year, Samuel F. Kitchell joins an elite group of only 15 other industry leaders inducted into the Hall of Fame since its inception in 1990. The award honors individuals whose leadership, innovation, and dedication have made a lasting impact on both the school and the construction industry.

A Champion for Construction Education
Sam Kitchell’s passion for advancing the construction industry extended beyond the projects his company built. Recognizing the need for formal education in construction management, Sam played a pivotal role as a key industry advisor during the launch of ASU’s construction management program. His insights and advocacy helped shape a curriculum that would not only address the immediate needs of the field but also encourage a culture of creativity and collaboration. Today, ASU’s construction management program stands as one of the leading programs in the nation, thanks in part to Sam’s vision of cultivating future industry leaders who could approach challenges with a fresh perspective and innovative solutions.

A Lasting Impact on the Industry and Community
Sam Kitchell’s story began far from the deserts of Arizona. Born in Hingham, Massachusetts, he pursued higher education at Amherst College before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he moved his young family to Phoenix in 1948, where he laid the foundation for what would become Kitchell Corporation. From humble beginnings, the company grew under his leadership, expanding into healthcare, hospitality, and real estate development, and becoming a pioneer in construction management.

Sam also ensured that Kitchell Corporation became 100% employee-owned, reflecting his belief in the value of people. His leadership philosophy emphasized enjoyment and dedication, famously stating, “my philosophy of life is to enjoy it.” This philosophy guided him through his career and personal life, leaving a lasting impact on the company and the community.

The legacy Sam Kitchell created sparked innovations and entrepreneurial ventures that far surpassed his initial vision. His enduring legacy fosters ongoing growth through diversification, creativity, robust operations, management expertise, giving back and a spirit of entrepreneurship that continues to sustain and inspire a current workforce of over 1000 employees through four operating companies.

Sam’s commitment to community service and philanthropy was as strong as his business acumen. His influence extended well beyond the boardroom—he was a driving force behind the Phoenix Kidney Foundation, the Phoenix Symphony, and the Heard Museum. The establishment of the Sam and Betty Kitchell Family Heritage Garden at the Desert Botanical Garden stands as a testament to their enduring legacy. His philanthropic efforts also extended to the establishment of the Kitchell Employee Foundation, which continues to support various causes today.

Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future
As ASU celebrated its Hall of Fame and Academy of Distinguished Alumni inductees, the event not only reflected on the remarkable contributions of those being honored but also inspired a new generation of leaders to follow in their footsteps. The Hall of Fame recognizes those whose careers and personal commitments have advanced the school’s mission. This year’s honorees, including Sam Kitchell, exemplify what it means to be a leader in the industry.

Sam Kitchell’s induction into the Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to a man who believed in the value of people and the power of building a better future. Hall of Fame names are permanently and prominently displayed on the fourth and fifth floors of the Paul C. Helmick Center. His legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of engineers, builders, and leaders at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and beyond.
