Kitchell and design-build partner Orcutt | Winslow recently received a highly coveted National Design-Build Project/Team Award from the Design-Build Institute of America for the team’s extraordinary work on Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center’s new tower in Chandler, Ariz. Recognized for exemplary collaboration and integration in design-build project delivery, Chandler Regional is one of only three healthcare facilities around the country to receive this honor. One of the three projects will be named a National Award of Excellence winner during a ceremony on November 3 in Denver. Awards have been bestowed since 1996.

The project, a 171,000-square-foot hospital tower, was completed 105 days ahead of schedule (with no weekend work, no double shifts) and under budget. Rooted in collaboration, and dedicated to honoring Dignity Health’s mission, vision and values, a collective commitment was made by the architect, contractor and owner to involve all stakeholders from leadership through the end-users during the design and construction phases.

“It wasn’t just that Kitchell and Orcutt | Winslow gave us our new tower on time and within budget,” said Jane Hansen, Chief Operating Officer at Dignity Health Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert Medical Centers. “It was the way they worked, very team-driven and hands-on with our facilities staff. There’s no doubt in my mind that this project succeeded because they and members of our hospital staff worked together each step of the way.”

“To win a National Design-Build Project/Team Award, projects must not only achieve budget and schedule goals, but also demonstrate advanced and innovative application of design-build best practices,” said Executive Director/CEO of DBIA Lisa Washington, CAE. “This year’s winning projects exemplify Design-Build done right in their design-build process, excellence in design, and extraordinary teaming performance. The jury’s difficulty in choosing winners demonstrates how much design-build expertise has expanded since we started the awards program in 1996.”
