SAN DIEGO, Calif. (June 14, 2012) – Sharp HealthCare officials today celebrated the completion of the Douglas and Nancy Barnhart Cancer Center at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and Medical Office Plaza.

Developed and managed by Makena Medical Buildings LLC, the Center was designed by NTD Architects and built by a joint venture of Barnhart-Reese Construction (formerly known as J. Reese Construction) and Kitchell. A $1 million gift from local philanthropist and construction leader Douglas Barnhart and wife Nancy has made way for move-in at the $36 million facility.

The new facility measures 45,000 square feet over three stories, with the Cancer Center on the first level. Features of the Center include a patient lobby and waiting areas, exam rooms, a resource center, physicians’ offices, conference rooms, nurse stations, CT scan rooms, indoor and outdoor healing gardens, and one of the nation’s only radiation therapy vaults with floor-to-ceiling windows. The design includes extensive use of natural lighting, rock gardens and interior atriums to provide a comfortably soothing ambiance in waiting, exam and treatment areas.  A dual entrance design is featured to provide privacy for cancer patients receiving treatments.

The Cancer Center also includes a 2,000-square-foot Infusion Center, housed on the building’s second floor.  Designed to care for as many as 6 patients in lounge or private room environments, the Infusion Center also offers a peaceful outdoor roof garden.

The second and third floors each feature more than 10,000 square feet of medical office space available for lease, built to suit for each tenant. Eighty percent of the building is currently leased, including leases to Sharp HealthCare tenants. The medical office plaza features a unique and separate entrance from the Cancer Center.

Sharp Chula Vista is a 343-bed hospital with the largest array of health care services in south San Diego County. Home to the South Bay’s only Community Hospital Cancer Program certified by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, Sharp Chula Vista also specializes in cardiac care and bloodless surgery.

Completion of the new Marian Regional Medical Center marks new era for Santa Maria healthcare

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (June 4, 2012) – A new era in healthcare has begun in the Santa Maria Valley with the opening of Marian Regional Medical Center, a new 235,000-square-foot (double the existing size), $218 million tower tied in to the existing hospital. Owner Dignity Health selected Moon Mayoras Architects to design and Kitchell to construct the building. FDI Planning Consultants, a division of Kitchell, provided equipment transition services. The hospital’s mission-style exterior complements neighboring areas, following the City of Santa Maria architectural theme.

Kitchell started with a $13.8 million addition to the central plant to completely upgrade the original central plant built in the 1960s. Other features include a four-story (plus basement), 191-bed patient tower, a two-story above-grade connector to the existing hospital, neonatal intensive care (NICU), expanded emergency department, expanded critical care unit, surgical services, cardiac services (including open heart surgery), obstetrical and gynecological services, full diagnostic imaging services, including MRI and CT, cancer/oncology services, orthopedic services, pharmacy and respiratory therapy, new chapel, healing garden, and an expanded and relocated cafeteria.

“It’s great to be a part of a community landmark like this,” said Kitchell Project Director Michael Walsh. “Our team became really invested, celebrating alongside them when the transfer of patients was complete, the emergency room was full and the first birth was recorded.”
